Editorial Reviews

Review

"Douglas Nolt provides readers with a scholarly and comprehensive discussion of peacemaking as an integral process of practicing law. He provides an excellent historical perspective as well as theories on dispute resolution techniques."

From the Author

This project began with two related questions. The first question was one I posed to myself. I asked, "What material would I need and want to teach law students and lawyers how to become peacemakers?" The second question was posed to me by a numberof lawyers and judges attending my mediation training courses: "What do you recommend for further reading on all of this?" This book answers those questions.

Nothing in this book is particularly new but it is very insightful and very thorough. Most mediators and others dealing with conflicted parties are too involved in the mechanics of their work to try to figure out what people are actually thinking while participating in mediation or other dispute resolution processes. This book allows the reader to go behind the curtain to see and consider the psychological strings involved with the participants which only a professional can observe and access. This vision can be of great assistance to mediators and others in trying to identify and respond to the underlying needs and interests of the parties they are trying to benefit. While it is apparently primarily designed to assist young lawyers in better understanding the nature of human conflict, it has something in it for anyone who works in the field of mediation or dispute resolution. My only reason in rating it four stars instead of five, was that I wished Mr. Noll would have given us the benefit of more of his great wisdom in this important discipline.
