An excellent read with common sense safety information that I as a new parent don't think about yet. I've highlighted excerpts but will be revisiting this book over and over again. I'm hoping to implement some features in my child's school in the future

It really adds up to our own (mis)conceptions of what child protection should be. It's a definite must-read, particularly because as parents, most of the times, we tend to think we're raising our children better than any other parents we know, and by reading/researching we realize that many things we had for granted aren't just so and we should always look out for the simplest things, because we sometimes forget we are dealing with children rather than our pairs!...

This book was difficult for me to stomach, but I would rather put myself through the discomfort of reading this heavy book than have my children exposed to the trauma of child abuse. We don't like to think about these things, but we must. Read this book for your children's sake (but do NOT let them read it). This book has helped me give my kids a very solid understanding of child safety principles, and Sherryll Kraizer has done a fabulous job of giving readers tools for helping their kids stay safe without scaring their kids or exposing them to themes they shouldn't know about. To be blunt, she answers the question, "How do I keep my kids safe from sexual predators without traumatizing them with the facts of child sexual abuse?" The problem of child abuse (sexual, physical, emotional, etc) is much more prevalent than we want to realize. Putting our heads in the sand and pretending it isn't there will not help. Educating ourselves so that we can help prevent it DOES help.

This book provides excellent suggestions for non-threatening ways to bring up the scary topics of abuse and abduction with your children in order to give them the best tools to protect themselves. It also helps parents to understand more about the nature of the dangers potentially affecting their children. I have already recommended it to other parents and will continue to do so.

The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that the chapter on Internet safety is VERY outdated. I'd love to see an update with discussions about Twitter, Facebook, and Internet use on mobile devices instead of discussions about chat rooms and Compuserv. However, that is only one short chapter and I did not buy this book for advice on Internet safety. Additionally, the general approach to teaching children to be safe is timeless and applies with any situation - including Internet use.

Concise though some of the statistics and the section on the internet are a bit outdated. Overall well written and good practical information for raising children who will speak up for themselves to stop would-be abusers.

I am a social worker and am always looking for ways to help kids learn how to keep themselves safe when safe adults are not available. This book gives great tips on how to teach kids how to do just that. Parents aren't always able to be there and this book gives kids tools they need to be able to rely on themselves if/when needed. I have read this book several times since receiving it and have used the methods with my own 4 year old child as well as the foster kids I work with. The book is able to be used with kids as young as 2 on up....great book with very practical and life saving advice.

"The Safe Child Book" is excellent for teaching children how to be safe as they grow up. Explains children can protect themselves using the Safe Child Program. There were so many common sense ideas from lots of research that I hadn't thought of. Teaching them that they are in charge of their safety when you are not there, and also that their body belongs to them. All in non threatening and empowering ways for the children. Giving them permission to be assertive and to say no, to avoid grooming.

Examples are teaching a child how to stay out of arms reach if a stranger came into the garden, by playing non threatening games of reaching out to them so they understand distance. Explaining that if someone knows their name it doesn't mean they aren't a stranger. Apparently this is a way strangers will approach children, by pretending they are a friend that knows the family, and in studies children will go along with suggestions from a stranger that knows their name.

Many other things to learn in this book. I advise buying it when your children are preschoolers and starting them off on the right track.

Well worth buying, I wouldn't want to be without it. It has given me confidence, as my children start school, that they are more likely to stand up for themselves. Thanks to the author for her good work!
