Since I began flying at age 17, and had my private pilot license before I had a driver’s license, I guess flying was a first priority! I joined the Canadian Air Force and graduated from Royal Military College with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering then went to pilot training. I flew the Canadian version of the UH-1N in a tactical support role with the Army. Empire Test Pilot School took up 1979, and I stayed in England on an exchange tour with the Royal Air Force at their test squadron flying 6 different types at once –ranging from the Chinook to the Gazelle. After returning to Canada for two years at Cold Lake, I joined Bell Helicopter for the model 400 project in Fort Worth and did a lot of instructing on the Bell 206. That was followed by nearly 4 years instructing test pilots at the US Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River. England lured me back in 1989 to the International Test Pilot School for more flight test teaching. After a couple of years consulting and free-lance flying, I worked at Transport Canada as a certification test pilot on the Bell 407, 430 and 427. In 2001 I moved to California to teach at National Test Pilot School, and then went to Mercy Air to fly an EMS Bell 412. In between all of these, I wrote for Rotor and Wing, Helicopter World, and now Vertical magazine. My book, ‘Cyclic and Collective’ was updated in 2005. I’m currently between houses and working for Marinvent Corporation in Montreal, teaching short courses and providing expert advice on legal cases involving helicopters. I’ve got over 6,500 hours on 60 different types of helicopters and fixed wing airplanes.

Very thorough and easy to follow. As a student in flight school right now, this feels like a must have.

Fabulous book, down to earth and easy to navigate. I bought it because it was recommended by my flight instructor, it broke things down into simple English and was logical throughout. Helped a lot on my course, although I started it whilst still doing my PPL the book is broken into two main parts and it was helpfull all the way through.

Great, detailed and well thought out information. I love the tidbits of info and supporting of information throughout the book. Very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend to any helicopter pilot looking to understand, continue learning and evolve your insight to helicopter flying.

Good book to give alternate explanations for things, some topics are more helpful than others, sometimes he uses too much math to explain concepts and it with the unique acronyms can make it some work to really digest, but other times it's helpful. Biggest issue, as was said in a different review, some of the figures are extremely small and illegible (examples: Figs 2-19,5-4, 5-6 8-6, 9-5, 12-1) or cut-off (fig 10-2), and just the editor didn't do a great job catching some spelling errors and formatting issues like on pg 38 for example "=360?percent1?"...I think for a book like this that has good explanatory pictures & helpful insight from a proven expert that they should've done better by the author. But hey, it's affordable & helpful and probably worth it. I'd say so far, it's helped me to somewhat better understand somethings, but nothing earth-shattering yet. Still reading through it.

I absolutely love this book!! I'm a helicopter instructor, and this book has really helped me through the ratings. The wording is different than the FAA books, a little bit more down to earth. I love the vastness as well, it covers a lot.

As an engineer you get confronted by loads of books with more loads of math formulas on even more loads of formulas. This book instead explains the technology. Solid, knowledgeable and with practitioners foundation without getting fuzzy with physics. A must read before starting an engineering carreer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! Wide and deep in its coverage of the subject
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2011
This book is superb. Split into 2 sections, the first half for novices (and piston helicopters), the second for experienced hands (and turbine helicopters). It covers a wide spread of subjects, initially at a fairly easy to read level, before expanding on this in the second section. I would say it's written for pilots not engineers and you'll soon be on your way to understanding how improbable helicopters are. The book is printed by Amazon and Shawn Coyle is a test pilot who now works for the same flight safety company as the legendary Ray Prouty (who's books are also printed by Amazon (see the inside cover when you get it if you don't believe me!). I have learnt a great deal about helicopters types I have yet to fly (I have over 2000 hrs multi engine turbine so far, but no piston). If you like Prouty's style, you'll love this. If you get this and Prouty's two volumes you'll have the ultimate collection
