Rail residual stress distributions can be complex and variable in nature, as different manufacturing techniques produce varying stress magnitudes and distributions. To evaluate the effect of residual stresses on rail integrity, an analysis technique was sought that could quantify the effect of these stresses on web crack propagation.

The computer program LS-DYNA3D was used to simulate the behavior of a specific, though representative, heavy truck cab-over tractor-trailer vehicle during a full 180° rollover event. These simulations provide a key component in the development of a physical testing procedure for evaluating structural integrity and occupant crash protection system designs in heavy trucks.

Marc H. Richman, ScD, PE, has been actively engaged in Forensic and Consulting Engineering for over 45 years. He has personally supervised and conducted over 3,000 investigations for individuals, attorneys, insurance carriers, industrial firms, state and federal agencies and commission, and police and fire departments.

Dr. Richman's educational background at MIT was physical metallurgy and failure analysis. He taught as an instructor at MIT and ran the analytical Metallography laboratory there as well as set up the electron microscopy laboratory at MIT. At Brown, he was director of the Central Electron Microscopy Lab and was very active in Failure Analysis and Fractography as well as Analytical Metallography.

Dr. Richman has investigated failures of offshore drilling rigs and propeller shaft failures(Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding), helicopter crashes on the Pan Am building and at Newark Airport (NY Airways and Lloyds of London), construction elevator failures (Gilbane Construction and Aetna), bridge failures (Mystic River Bridge upper deck - MassPort Authority), hydroelectric plant shaft failures (McCallum Enterprises), pressure vessel and machinery failures, military equipment and weapons failures, building failures and collapses (US Navy and others), and steel mill production (Italy).

Litigation Support - Marc H. Richman has testified for both plaintiff and defense in about 175 trials in civil and criminal courts. He has served as Technical Advisor to the US District Court (RI) on patent cases (Hon. Raymond Pettine) and has been a consultant for the US Naval Applied Science Laboratory, the US Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, Battelle, Texas Instruments, etc.).

    Case Synopsis - A family wanted to add a self-contained heater for their home living room for use upon the loss of in-home AC (Alternating Current) power. They went to a nearby Home & Building Supply store to select and purchase a heater. The store salesman recommended a kerosene heater, which could provide independent heat upon a loss of power. The salesman recommended a kerosene heater rated at 23,000 BTU/Hour, and as a feature of the heater sale, he assembled the heater and provided brief operating instructions on its use.

    All is quiet at 10:30 pm until a nurse notices water on the 2nd floor hallway. Building maintenance is called and discovers a ruptured pipe fitting in a bathroom on the 2nd floor. The water is shut off at 10:45 pm but unfortunately the damage has been done. It is later discovered that water penetrated through perforations in the ceiling in the CT suite on the 1st floor exposing the 16-slice CT gantry and patient table to water.

    John Batey is a Professional Engineer with more than 30 years of experience related to Combustion Equipment Design, Testing and Performance Evaluation. He started and headed the combustion equipment research and development program at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This program focused on testing and evaluating residential and commercial oil and gas heating equipment.

    As a consulting engineer, he completed many successful projects related to residential, commercial and industrial burner operation, adjustment, and efficiency improvement. He has supplied consulting services to many law firms, insurance companies, oilheat marketers and associations, oil and gas equipment manufacturers. He has served as Technical Director of the Oilheat Manufacturers Association (OMA) for the past ten years.

With a Masters in Engineering Management, he provides professional engineering consultation services for the residential, commercial, and industrial sector.

    Mr. Freedman evaluates building mechanical and structural infrastructure. His experience includes the design, engineering, and construction of HVAC systems, boilers and chillers, plumbing systems, and utility conservation products for the residential, commercial, and industrial sector. He is registered to practice in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Maryland.

    Since 2006, Mr. Freedman has been an adjunct professor at Western New England College in Springfield, MA where he teaches materials science laboratory, energy management, and alternative energy sources. In 2010, he became the first professor to successfully include the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Exam as part of an engineering classroom as sponsored by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). Mr. Freedman is an advocate for utility conservation and more equitable electric natural gas, water, and sewer tariffs.
