6/17/2009 · Crisis Management
It might have been 30 years ago but in a new age of immediate and global communications there is a message here for 2009: Any world leader is on a stage these days and the audience compared to 1979 is not just one country

6/21/2001 · Crisis Management
Experience has shown that when suddenly faced with a catastrophe, crisis managers have a tendency, from the outset, to try and follow familiar or routine systems. The more disturbing the situation the stronger the urge to take refuge in familiar procedures

Let's say you have Bill who is a good guy in many ways but he can be a grouch. He is particularly likely to nag the young female accounting staff for inquiring about his expense reports. He looms over them and talks loudly sometimes shaking his finger, and using occasional mild profanity. You've talked to him and he always gives a half-hearted sheepish apology - and then does it again the following month.

Almost all of us have been to the yearly company football game, company barbeque, or happy hour. Organizations often think these events create closeness, trust, a sense of "teamwork", or even a sense of family. We love a good burger and a beer as much as anyone but in our experience the injuries, harassment and other complaints that can come from company social events may cause problems for employers. And we find that the defense that the events were "voluntary" may not hold up.

What does it take to improve science performance in an inner-city high school? Could a science "immersion" strategy change motivation and interest in science? How can we meet a key strategic goal of our urban district: "All students graduate and are prepared for postsecondary education, successful careers and productive citizenship."

Creative professionals in team-based work settings value work communications skills among their colleagues. As public schools create professional learning communities and experiment with teacher-led curriculum and program development, traditional interview processes may prove inadequate for these new collaborative environments. New and creative selection models may be needed to enable teacher or other professional teams to choose candidates with the 21st century skills needed for success. In public sector environments, work rules are often highly developed and professionals are entitled to interview. Qualifications, training, experience and seniority as determinants often get reduced to transfer rights using seniority as the main or only criteria. This trend detracts from creating a competitive environment in which to attract & retain a high-quality teaching staff. Solutions can be found within existing contract parameters, however, if the attributes necessary to teach 21st Century skills are actually required to be demonstrated, not just described, in the interview process.

Critical to a dynamic STEM school is a high level of instructional rigor. While this is true in all STEM schools, it is a particular challenge in those programs that serve populations inexperienced with high levels of rigor in their previous coursework.

OK, I did learn enough in 35 years of high school teaching, administration, and marriage to know one thing: The way to anyone's heart is through their stomach! Feed them, and they will come.

Establishing a STEM High School (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics), and the Aiken Environmental, Ohio's first public environmental high school proved to be successful strategies to increase student engagement and raise standardized scores in science. High-poverty urban students from declining academic and disciplinary environments produced significant gains on science test results and credit attainment towards graduation. Using multiple overlapping rigor and SEL strategies, students experienced "science immersion," project-based learning, and a social-emotional curriculum that emphasized personal development and team/community-building skills.

When selecting projects under a limited budget, a firm should implement the project that will return the most value. Ultimately, firm value is measured by stock price, which can be impacted when the firm makes a major announcement. This paper shows that announcements of energy management projects correlate with a 21.33% increase in stock price within 150 days of the announcement. This increase is in addition to the risk-adjusted return the firm would normally experience . For example, during a "bull market" a firm's expected return was 10%. After the announcement, the return would increase by 21.33%, for a net return of 31.33%. These results suggest that investors react positively to energy management projects. This outcome demonstrates one more strategic incentive for firms to implement energy management projects.

As a new US government administration comes into control, many people have asked me if I am optimistic about energy efficiency projects... the answer is YES. No matter how you analyze it, energy efficiency is a great investment... dare I say "Huge". Energy efficiency projects have high returns on investment and extremely low risk. The only thing they don't have is a "compelling event" forcing them to get done. In contrast, a repairing a roof leak has a sense of urgency because of potential damage from inaction.

About five years ago, I wrote about project developer who specializes in energy tax deductions and rebates. We call him "Dr. EPAct" because he knows how to navigate and attain substantial tax deductions and rebates, which pay for most (if not all) of a project's cost. His highly tangible skills in accounting are typically "outside" of an energy manager's core strengths, but definitely worth knowing. This month, Dr. EPAct (Bill Bissmeyer) is contributing again in this article! He will help explain the Federal Tax Extenders Act, which was signed on December 18, 2015 into law. More importantly, Bill presents a case study showing the economics and tax advantages that you have available to you. Frankly- you cannot afford to skip this article because it may be the key you need to get your project funded.

3/14/2017 · Environment
Previous research indicates there are additional (often unreported) benefits from saving energy.1,2 This paper identifies these "additional benefits" and describes how to calculate their value.3,4 In addition, we found a high percentage of facility managers experienced some of these benefits. For example, in a recent survey, 92% of facility managers experienced reduced maintenance material costs as a result of energy conservation (primarily because lights, filters and other equipment lasted longer when operated less hours per year).

You think you're about to be a hero by entering into an Energy Savings Agreement, (which is supposed to fund improvement projects based on savings). Your long-time law firm reviewed the contracts, and your engineers have signed off. Everything seems positive. So what can go wrong? Actually, quite a bit... and your knowledge can be the difference between having a glowing success or abject failure that could cost you a job, reputation or worse.

Eric A. Woodroof
The landscape for implementing energy efficient projects is rapidly changing and the need for energy project financing has never been greater. This book provides the key success factors for structuring a finance energy project and getting it approved by top management. Part I covers the need for financing as well as the basic concepts. Part II covers some practical applications of financing such as performance contracts, power purchase agreements, and other items like PACE financing. Part III contains articles that have helped many engineers get more projects implemented as they include information that can be used to present projects and get them approved.

Meeting a need in the marketplace for information on how to operate a sustainable facility and reduce carbon emissions, the Green Facilities Handbook clearly explains why green business is good business and delineates practical strategies to green your operations in energy and management. The book explores issues in the greening of a facility, including janitorial considerations, fuel choices for fleets, and recycling. Additional information is provided on carbon reduction terminology, monitoring and reporting, and carbon trading as well as offset strategies. Special bonus chapters include valuable information on financing and procedures for “green” marketing.

Population health is not possible in a discounted fee-for-service world, and the significant healthcare business challenge is how to transition from fee-for-service to risk-based capitation in a sustainable way. The following represents an outline for how this transition can be staged so that early steps exploit the benefits of fee-for-service while the latter ones exploit a more capitated model:

    10/21/2015 · Healthcare
Not too long ago, I had the sad task of testifying at a civil litigation and a judicial hearing for two physicians who had been suspended from their respective medical staffs. In both cases, the suspensions and resultant procedural rights were avoidable because proactive communication and management did not effectively take place. Such events should be rare and most medical staffs can easily avoid them by focusing on preventive actions and addressing potential performance issues early in a supportive and assertive manner.

Hospital CEOs may have once cast a wary eye when a retail clinic opened in their backyard, but that paradigm has shifted as health systems are increasingly opening their own retail clinics or affiliating with retail clinic operators.

    7/24/2015 · Healthcare
Regulatory hurdles prevent more hospitals from using e-health to its full potential. Federal and state policies and regulations on care rendered via technology from a remote site spin a tangled web for providers either engaged in e-health or who want to be. A February 2014 article in Health Affairs found strong associations between state policies and hospitals' adoption of e-health, also known as tele-health or telemedicine.

Alarm fatigue has moved to the forefront of hazards on the hospital floor. Nursing staff gets bombarded by hundreds or thousands of beeps, rings, whistles and pings emanating from bedside devices in a shift, and it can be difficult for them to distinguish the critical from the routine. An analysis of hospital alarms at Johns Hopkins Hospital counted a total of 59,000 alarms over a 12-day observation period, an average of 350 alarms per patient per day.1

Of course, the Law of Gravity has always been in force, but it wasn't until Newton focused the creativity of his one-pointed attention on a falling apple that he (and all humanity) received the blessing of finally recognizing a perfectly obvious truth
