The role of an accident reconstructionist is to provide a forensic conclusion to the cause and events of an accident. Some accidents may involve passenger vehicles or consumer products, such as an ATV.

Many highway traffic accidents occur as a result of sudden tire failures. One particular kind of tire failure is called tread separation, and it can be especially dangerous in some circumstances. This kind of failure involves the outer steel belt layer of the tire peeling away violently, often without causing the tire to go flat.

Why is there statistically such a high number of rollover accidents and injuries involving UTV's and ATV's, such as the Yamaha Rhino and the Polaris Razor?

Quality control starts at the point of product conception and is carried all the way through to the final design and manufacture of a product.

Some motor vehicle accidents take place during the night time hours when natural sun light is not present.

When we drive our vehicles down the road, we are driving them at a certain velocity and direction. All vehicles have weight and mass to the order of a few hundred pounds for a motorcycle, a few thousand pounds for a large SUV or luxury car or several tons for a tractor-trailer truck. When our vehicles move at speed down the road, they create energy by virtue of their mass and forward velocity

All is quiet at 10:30 pm until a nurse notices water on the 2nd floor hallway. Building maintenance is called and discovers a ruptured pipe fitting in a bathroom on the 2nd floor. The water is shut off at 10:45 pm but unfortunately the damage has been done. It is later discovered that water penetrated through perforations in the ceiling in the CT suite on the 1st floor exposing the 16-slice CT gantry and patient table to water.

    1/14/2014 · Machinery
The role that water plays in our existence is well understood. Without it, most living things will rapidly wither and die. Equally catastrophic of course, are the consequences of too much water. Not only to living things, in terms of widespread flooding, but also in terms of damage to machinery and equipment from exposure to water.

Is it possible to differentiate between lightning related surges and artificially generated electrical surges?

E-Discovery is the process of collecting and exchanging electronically stored information (ESI) that is requested during the discovery phase in civil litigation.

    3/14/2013 · Corrosion
An ominous cloud of smoke continues to billow as the sprinklers rain water throughout the facility. The production manager's mechanical and electrical equipment is rapidly deteriorating, and within hours, the previously pristine equipment normally used to manufacture precision circuit boards will have a thin coating of flash rust with further damage forthcoming.

    1/25/2013 · Damages
Doctors and nurses need to make quick, educated decisions to minimize the impact of difficult situations. These decisions are based on the practitioner's years of experience, their education, the science and technology available, and with the assistance of critical analytical and diagnostic equipment.

    11/19/2012 · Damages
A water pipe breaks in a healthcare provider's facility, saturating an MRI control cabinet. The manufacturer is called in and spends $200,000 on attempted repairs. The unit still doesn't work. The manufacturer says the entire unit needs to be replaced, at a cost of $240,000.

Hybrid cars have been on US roads for many years, starting with Honda InSight (1999) and Toyota Prius(2000) in mass production.

In crashes between two automobiles, it is generally assumed that the lighter vehicle will suffer more damage and that its occupants will suffer higher levels of injury.

This article contains a few of the findings from our recent study of automobile safety in frontal crashes. Parts of the data analyses are presented but details such as the relationship of a particular design feature to the measured injury indicators are highly dependent on specific cases and are available only for individual discussions.

The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (part of the U.S Department of Transportation) underwent major changes recently. For automobiles designated as model years 2011 and later, the changes involve both what is measured and what is published.

Over the years, there have been several product liability litigations regarding pedestrians being injured and the front structure designs of the vehicles being alleged as the significant factor.

The structural behavior of automobile seats and seatbacks is one of the factors often examined in investigating injuries to a vehicle's occupant(s) in crashes.

Airbags in modern automobiles have been around for many years and their record in improving occupant safety in crashes is generally well accepted. However, many questions still arise regarding their deployment and performance in crashes.

Dr. Kanellakopoulos is a technology leader with 25+ years of experience in R&D and engineering management in both academia and industry.

He has designed and built telecom products such as DSL and Carrier Ethernet hardware and software, as well as a prototype fully automated electric vehicle. He has conducted applied research in adaptive control of nonlinear systems, with applications to automotive driver assistance systems (adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, vehicle collision avoidance) and active suspensions. He has significant experience with international telecommunication standards (ITU-T SG15/Q4), and has directed collaborative projects with several automotive/truck manufacturers and vendors (Ford, Mercedes-Benz, DaimlerChrysler, Freightliner, Gentex, Visteon).

His deep technical expertise in the areas of telecommunications and automotive driver assistance systems has allowed him to analyze patents and products in detail, and explain clearly (in expert reports, depositions, and court testimony) the main issues that the judge and jury need to comprehend in order to understand the essence of the case. His extensive educational experience allows him to help judges and jurors understand the topic they are dealing with, instead of confusing them with unnecessary technical details.

After all, it takes excellent teaching skills and a deep understanding of a complex technical concept to convey the essence of that concept to non-experts without talking down to them.
    Ioannis Kanellakopoulos, PhD, et al
Using a pedagogical style along with detailed proofs and illustrative examples, this book opens a view to the largely unexplored area of nonlinear systems with uncertainties. The focus is on adaptive nonlinear control results introduced with the new recursive design methodology--adaptive backstepping. Describes basic tools for nonadaptive backstepping design with state and output feedbacks.
    Ioannis Kanellakopoulos, PhD
Abstract: A systematic procedure for the design of adaptive regulation and tracking schemes for a class of feedback linearizable nonlinear systems is developed. The coordinate-free geometric conditions, which characterize this class of systems, do not constrain the growth of the nonlinearities. Instead, they require that the nonlinear system be transformable into the so-called parametric-pure feedback form...
