A belief is a conviction adhered to often in the face of factual evidence to the contrary. This paper inevitably represents my beliefs moulded by my experience of working with teenagers in London and tempered by my knowledge of the work of my colleagues.

Children suffer the traumas and injustices of warfare and conflict without the ability to influence or control their circumstances. As refugees they become the flotsam of society drifting from one inhospitable country to another in search of safety. They have been with us for generations, their numbers fluctuating and their distribution changing as the adult world decides who to wage war on next.

The National Adoption Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to expand adoption opportunities throughout the United States for children with special needs and those from minority cultures.

Founded in 1972, the Center works with social workers and other adoption professionals to bring children and families together. Through its telecommunications network, (the National Adoption Exchange), adoption professionals list their available children and interested families and make "matches" between them. In this way, a child in Oregon, for example, can be matched with a family in Florida.

There are presently 115 members on the National Adoption Exchange. They include social workers, members of parent groups, state adoption exchange staff and government officials. If you have a completed homestudy and are approved to adopt, you can register on the Exchange. An adoption coordinator will do a search to see if there are any children listed that match your interests.

  • It is a brand-new school year: 2011-2012. If there is any school superintendent in the nation who currently operates without formalized school safety plans in place (quite apart from the noticeable but ignored "thou-shalt-nots" festooned on campus walls, doors and fences), s/he needs to regard-as a wake-up scream-the thunderous allegations of negligence, child endangerment, foreseen traumatic event, breach of duty of care, sexual molestation, dereliction of duty, and reckless disregard hurled by a passing parade of aggrieved and angry parents, as they will set the pace nationwide in the filing of future lawsuits over the on-campus dangers and subsequent injuries and traumas, of various kinds and degrees, to their children.

On June 14, 2013, the nation paused to pray and remember the unspeakably horrific shooting, a massacre that claimed 26 lives, on December 14, 2012, at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown Connecticut. The cruel irony, as legions of the country's experts, myself included, continue to engage in differential diagnoses and soul-searching for answers as to who and what went wrong, is that Sandy Hook Elementary School probably could not have done anything more, different or better, to protect its students. Short of constructing a walled-in campus inside of which students would receive provisions and other necessities from the outside.

Wilderness therapy, aimed primarily at adolescents presenting with problem behaviors, includes a range of interventions that incorporate nature and the wilderness as prominent aspects of treatment. In theory, wilderness therapists seek to effect both behavioral and attitudinal changes. Through providing a context of challenging outdoor living and a group setting in an emotionally safe place, wilderness therapy aims to address problem behaviors and to facilitate an emerging sense of healing, well-being, and personal and social responsibility.1 Wilderness therapy's action-oriented approach is said to be particularly appropriate for adolescents and is intended to build self-esteem, internal locus of control, interpersonal skills, trust and team building, and a sense of group belonging.2

The sensationalism of many criminal trials, especially those of a capital nature, often result from the aggravating circumstances impacting the victim.2 Conversely, the mitigating circumstances that affect the accused's criminality rarely grab headlines.3 During the sentencing phase of a criminal trial, mitigating factors may justify leniency or otherwise serve to lessen the sentence for the crime with which the accused has been charged.4 Whether a particular factor will be considered a mitigating one will depend upon the particular facts of the case. The federal Sentencing Reform Act of 19845 provides guidance in this process,6 but each state maintains the discretion to dictate its own criteria within the confines of constitutional constructs.7 The United States Supreme Court has increasingly addressed the importance of clarity in the presentation and consideration of mitigating evidence, which is integral to the trial and sentencing of an accused.8
