Kevin Smith has testified at depositions and trials on several hundred matters. He has performed hundreds of investigations into product failures involving injury and property damage, and has reconstructed numerous accidents.     Geoffrey Beresford Hartwell is a Chartered Engineer who practices as an Arbitrator, Adjudicator and Expert for Determination. Geoffrey is the former Senior Partner of Consulting Mechanical and Electrical Engineers BHA Cromwell House.

    A one time Chairman of the Expert Witness Society, Geoffrey Hartwell has experience giving evidence in court (in both civil and criminal matters) and in International Arbitration. He sometimes is retained as a Single Joint Expert or as a Tribunal Expert. His services are offered to both Plaintiff and Defense. Even when retained on behalf of a Client he, like all Experts, has an overriding responsibility to the Court or Tribunal.

    After his early career in aerospace and nuclear energy, Geoffrey entered private practice in association with the late Leslie Heap and Gerald Lewis of Heap and Digby, Consulting Engineers, in 1969. While with them he designed water and sewage equipment and also the bascule moving machinery for the Lowestoft Bridge, in Suffolk.     In parallel with his design career, Geoffrey was first appointed as arbitrator in 1972 and his first foreign arbitration, an ICC appointment in Switzerland, took place later that year. He studied Law to Intermediate level and then transferred to the examinations of the Institute of Arbitrators (now Chartered) of which he became Chairman in 1996-1997 and for whom he taught in various countries on several courses, including the prestigious Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration.

    Despite their history of successful use as fuel system disinfectants and fuel preservatives, antimicrobial pesticide use faces increasing restrictions due to both regulatory control and public concerns. A variety of non-chemical treatments have been used with varying degrees of success to disinfect non-fuel fluids and to at least partially inhibit biofilm development on infrastructure surfaces. Promoters of one technology have claimed successful fuel disinfection and fuel-tank fouling prevention. This paper will review a range of non-chemical treatment technologies and will present the results of preliminary evaluations of several technologies that were tested on Jet A fuels that had been challenged with either Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Hormoconis resinae. Data are presented on treatment impact on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, culturability and live/dead direct counts in Jet A-1 and on glass microcosm surfaces.

    Smaller retailers depend on the expertise and reputations of their suppliers. Traditionally, refiners' attitudes about fuel were that if it met specifications at the time of sales, but failed later, the problem belonged to the owner at that time. As we begin to see impact of the Clean Air Act-driven fuel reformulations, increased consumer awareness and increased susceptibility to contamination, all market participants are going to have to cooperate to ensure that the customer with the engines gets consistently good fuel.

    Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assays have been used to quantify bioburdens (biomass) in low-organic-compoundcontent fluids (freshwater, seawater, cooling tower water, and similar fluids) since the early 1950s. The original methodology was labor intensive and required considerable laboratory skill. Over the past half-century, the protocol has been simplified substantially, but until recently, chemical interferences made it impractical to use the ATP test in metalworking fluids (MWF).

    In August, 2012 a member of the LinkedIn Metalworking Fluids Group asked for a recommendation for the best biocide/fungicide package to be used to protect a semisynthetic metalworking fluid from biodeterioration. His posting has generated nearly 50 responses. Some of the suggestions were clearly based on limited experience; experience with few MWF, a limited number of MWF systems or both. I posted a number of comments to the string and have compiled them in this article.

Most of the knowledge of lubricant biodeterioration has been extrapolated from field and laboratory experience with metalworking fluids. Compositionally more complex than most lubricants, metalworking fluids are either solutions or emulsions of 5 to 10% coolant concentrate in water.

    Anyone who has a home with trees around it will someday need to remove dead or dying limbs and trees. The best managed landscaping requires trees to be pruned or removed as they grow. In addition, storms often create dangerous situations as limbs and trees are broken or bent over. I remember living on Lake Martin in Alabama during Hurricane Opel. The storm hit at night and we sat in the basement listening to all the commotion and guessing what was happening to our home. Occasionally, I would go up to the main floor with a flash light (power was toast) and peer out the windows trying to assess the damage. One time I reported to my family that the porch roof was gone. The porch faced the lake and the direction of the wind. It had rained all day before the hurricane winds hit causing the soil around the trees that separated our home from the water to soften up. At day light we found all the lakeside trees pushed over onto our roof.

    Sadek E. El-Alfy, PhD (Mining), DIC, BSC (ENG), is a Professional Mining Engineer with almost 40 years of continuous experience in an operating environment. An Underground Mining Engineer as well as an Open Pit Mining Engineer, he has experience in Mineral Processing as well as Mine Maintenance.

    Dr. El-Alfy's career includes hard rock underground mining for over 15 years. During those years, he has an opportunity to construct and operate a large Gold Process plant in Timmins Ontario which amplified his experience and interest in Gold Mineral Processing.

    When he moved to Labrador City in 1990, Dr. El-Alfy was appointed GM of Canada’s largest Iron Ore open pit operation, mining close to 200,000 TPD. In this capacity, he was handed the opportunity to become closely acquainted and experienced in the maintenance challenges surrounding large scale mining operations with respect to rope shovels and electric trucks.

    Dr. El-Alfy offers litigation support services to attorneys for Plaintiff and Defense. He is available for on-site inspection of mines and mining equipment.     The role of an accident reconstructionist is to provide a forensic conclusion to the cause and events of an accident. Some accidents may involve passenger vehicles or consumer products, such as an ATV.

    Many highway traffic accidents occur as a result of sudden tire failures. One particular kind of tire failure is called tread separation, and it can be especially dangerous in some circumstances.
