At schools, campuses, sporting events, and retail facilities, those thoughts ring out day after day. We have watched with horror the increasingly more frequent news of violence at establishments we once thought "safe" from wanton violence. One has to just scan the news to see that no place is immune from any type of random act that injures or kills innocent civilians, be it a movie theater, retail mall, sporting event, school, or church. In this column, let's take a look at a few basic elements.

We often times think of our own facilities, our sites as something no one would want to harm... or would they?

2/17/2002 · Expert Witnessing
Attorneys use experts in two ways. First is the traditional use of an expert as a witness in court. In this role, scientists, business people, or others with technical knowledge are retained by attorneys primarily for their opinions (oral, written, or both), ultimately to be given at deposition and in civil and criminal courts. Second, the expert may be used as a pre-trial consultant or more specifically as an undisclosed consultant

Olen R. Brown, PhD
"Miracles" reveals truth from Scripture, science and life. Everything that is or was or is to come is part of God's miracle. Science says that nothing is miraculous- Time and Chance created the universe with no meaning or purpose. God's universe has great meaning extending from the stars to atoms and to you. What we believe about miracles can be a source of great joy or missed joy in our lives. Dr. Brown, a Christian and author of over 100 scientific papers, has coined a new word, synscicretism, to call attention to the doctrine that today elevates science above religion. Science works best for the great "how" questions, but poorly for the great "why" of all things.
Olen R. Brown, PhD
This authoritative guide is designed to achieve a synthesis of understanding and effort between case science and case law. It examines all stages of attorney/expert interaction from the initial interview to post-trial evaluation.

What does the insurer do once the fire is out? Normally, the property loss notice is submitted by the insured as soon as possible to begin the adjustment process, collect for damages, and get life back in order. The insurer takes this information and relates it to the adjuster, who then investigates and settles the claim. In fire losses, many times the adjuster will seek the services of a fire investigator or other expert to assist in determining the cause of loss so he or she can make an informed decision as to how to proceed with adjusting the claim. But the expert assigned to a certain loss can make all the difference in the world in how a claim is settled and whether there is an avenue for recovery of insurance funds or protection in potential liability claims.

The benefits of reducing health-care associated infections (HAIs) are well documented, impacting both the general health of a facility and its bottom line. According to the CDC, HAIs cost the healthcare system $37 to $45 billion annually and account for an estimated 1.7 million infections and 99,000 deaths.

Following a fire event, a variety of people spend considerable time in the post-fire environment. In addition to first responders, fire and law enforcement, the individuals performing investigations in the property can include insurance claims adjusters, origin and cause fire investigators, inventory assessors, and damage assessors. The fire service, EMS and law enforcement may typically be assumed to be wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), but exposure to post fire hazards should be considered for those entering the property and performing work well after the fire event.

Mr. Pokorny and Mr. Penaloza discuss the "green insurance" programs and policies, LEED concerns for commercial claims and the expertise required to investigate "green claims" on these types of properties. Green building practices have grown annually, adding complexity to the analysis of construction projects, building systems, and building performance expectations. These efforts add a significant level of due diligence and the necessary expertise in responding to 'green claims' on the insurance products serving those properties.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are present is a variety of building materials and may present a significant impact to construction projects. The presence of PCBs in caulking, sealants, paints, adhesives and other building materials dates from the 1930s to the banning of PCBs in domestically manufactured products in 1979. In that time period, however, PCBs were added to hundreds of building products due to their chemical stability, nonflammability, insulating properties and high flash point.
