 John M. Collins Jr. MA, SHRM-SCP

Chief Managing Editor

John Collins has worked in the profession of forensic science as a practitioner and administrator for over 20 years.  He is the President and CEO of the Forensic Foundations Group, which is the publisher of Crime Lab Report. He works and resides near Lansing, Michigan where he served for two and a half years as the Director of Forensic Science for the seven laboratories of the Michigan State Police. During his tenure at the Michigan State Police, he led the laboratories toward their first-ever international accreditation under the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. John carries a Masters Degree in Organizational Management and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources. He's consulted with crime laboratories in the United States that have sought his assistance in improving their management systems. He was elected to the board of directors of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) in 2004 and served a three-year term before being appointed to serve as the organization's first Executive Director in 2009. Collins is a trained accreditation inspector and has inspected several laboratories throughout the United States and overseas.

 


Jay Jarvis (left) and John Collins (right) are the managing editors of Crime Lab Report.  They have over 50 years of combined experience in the practice and administration of forensic science in public crime laboratories.  Their publication was founded in 2007 and has been cited in a wide variety of authoritative references.  In 2013, they initiated the transition of Crime Lab Report to a quarterly print edition with enhanced website features for subscribers.   

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jay Jarvis, MS, MPA

Jay Jarvis has worked in forensic science for over 30 years, serving as a scientist and then laboratory manager for the Georgia State Crime Laboratory until his retirement in 2011. He is also a former Chair of the ASCLD/LAB Board of Directors. He began his forensic science career in 1979, after receiving his Master of Science in Forensic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. A native of St. James, New York, his scientific experience and training include firearm & toolmark identification, hair analysis, fiber analysis, paint analysis, glass analysis, shoe and tire impression comparison, arson and explosives analysis, latent fingerprint processing, presumptive blood testing, crime scene processing, and drug identification. After his career was elevated to the crime-laboratory management ranks in 1998, he became a member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD). In 2004, Jarvis was elected to the ASCLD Board of Directors and served a three-year term. He is a trained crime laboratory accreditation inspector and has participated in over ten laboratory inspections. He currently operates his own private consulting business, Arma Forensics.
