Gerald W. Smetana, MD, Board Certified in Internal Medicine, is a General Internist with over 31 years of experience in an academic primary care practice at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School where he teaches internal medicine to medical house staff and also extensively to practicing clinicians in continuing medical education settings. Practicing in an outpatient setting, Dr. Smetana cares for a panel of patients that is weighted towards those with multiple chronic illnesses and high disease complexity. In addition to all aspects of office based general internal medicine, his areas of interest include Preoperative Medical Evaluation, Hypertension, and Headache. I have been a board certified Nephrologist in clinic practice for the last nine years with experience in Dialysis as well as Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease. I have devised and peer reviewed numerous treatment plans within the standard care for nephrology diseases. I am a Partner at Metro Renal Associates based out of Washington, DC. Also I am a Medical director at Fresenius Medical Care Southeast DC, one of the newest dialysis facilities in DC that provides not only in-center treatment but also home dialysis. I give lectures and seminars on the benefits of home hemodialysis as a spokesperson for Next Stage corporations. My clinical acumen has led to numerous awards. I have been chosen as America’s Top Physician in Nephrology by Consumer Research Council of America and as one of the “Top 10 Nephrologist” by the American Registry. I am a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). During my ASN membership, I have been selected to serve on the Practicing Nephrology Group and the Nephrology Diversity and Inclusion Work Group.
