Lydia M. Contreras, PhD, is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer and Principal Investigator at The University of Texas at Austin Department of Chemical Engineering and the Institute for Cell & Molecular Biology (ICMB).

Dr. Contreras was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow of Infectious Diseases elected by the Division of Developmental Genetics and Bioinformatics at Wadsworth Center-New York State Dept. of Health in Albany, NY. She received training at the world renowned RNA institute in Vienna in Nucleic Acid Biochemistry.

Dr. Contreras' research focuses on innovating in vivo technologies to understand and design cellular regulation patterns in living systems (e.g. microbes and human cell models) for enhanced production of chemicals, as well as for novel biomarkers of environmental cellular toxicity and biomedical applications. She and her team combine molecular engineering, classic genetics, and biochemical approaches with high-throughput RNA sequencing, proteomics, and computational methods to engineer complex regulatory networks coupled to environmental stress responses. Dr. Contreras holds two patents for her work. Current efforts include:
  • Discovery of novel regulatory RNAs from ethanologenic bacteria to engineer higher cellular tolerance to alcohols and high-value chemicals
  • Discovery of regulatory networks in radio resistant bacteria for novel biosensory technologies
  • Engineering of novel biosensors for assaying the effect of environmental agents in human health
Litigation Support - Dr. Contreras works at the interface of RNA Biology and Protein Engineering to solve complex problems in medicine and biotechnology. She offers expert witness services to attorneys representing plaintiff and defendant.
