Keely Buesing, MD, FACS, is a Trauma, Emergency General, and Critical Care Surgeon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, a Level 1 academic trauma center. Dr. Buesing is double board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She is also President of MediWitness, LLC, where she provides Medical Records Review Consulting Services to the legal industry.
Research - Since 2013, Dr. Buesing has been researching novel treatment options for Acute Respiratory Failure. She has received numerous grants for her work with Peritoneal Microbubble Oxygen Therapy for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Dr. Buesing is currently collaborating on an NIH application for a Peritoneal Oxygen Delivery system with a budget of over $3,300,000.
In particular, Dr. Buesing and a collaborative team of researchers at the University’s National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) have been awarded a Department of Defense (DoD) Air Force contract to develop a portable alternative for oxygen delivery to injured soldiers on the battle field. In the event of severe respiratory distress syndrome, the new system would be used to save warfighters’ lives on the way to the hospital. This new system transforms the abdomen into a third lung, delivering oxygenated microbubbles into the abdomen and providing oxygen the solider needs to maintain organ function while his or her lungs recover.
