    Following a neurological event such as a traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular event, multiple sclerosis, etc., the medical needs of the person are of primary importance initially, for purposes of survival. As medical treatment proceeds and the survival needs of the person are met, the team of rehabilitation professionals will be established in an attempt to improve upon function performance in order to sustain quality of life. The rehabilitation team may be composed of a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, recreational therapist, vocational specialist, case manager, the psychologist, social worker, and nurse, to name several. A recent Gallup poll reported that an estimated 26 million Americans suffer with severe pain, with half of those reporting daily occurrence. Six in ten Americans with severe or moderate pain have lived with the condition for at least seven months. More than half report poor pain control despite having consulted with physicians. Interestingly, four in five Americans believe that aches and pains are a natural part of getting older, and 64% will see a doctor only when they cannot stand the pain any longer.

    Forensic psychological evaluations have become a valuable resource for the criminal justice system by addressing important forensic questions. For instance, assessing risk for violence can help courts make appropriate decisions on issues such as sentencing, granting privileges, and community reintegration. If an individual is assessed to be a high risk for future violence, a judge has grounds to order a more restrictive setting compared to someone who is a lower risk for recidivism. By tailoring court decisions based on accurate psychological evaluations, the community is safer while the defendant's rights are also protected.

    When minors violate a criminal statute, they enter the juvenile justice system rather than the adult criminal system. Although differences exist, both court systems recognize the competency to stand trial law.
