    James C. Arnold, Ph.D.
    San Francisco CA
    USA
    phone: 415-259-8542
James C. (Jim) Arnold, Ph.D., is a nationally-recognized authority in the areas of college-student alcohol use and fraternity hazing. He has been offering his services as a consultant and expert witness on these topics since 1999.

Dr. Arnold's academic and non-academic experience with respect to hazing and alcohol use in fraternities is both extensive and unique. His doctoral dissertation focused on the ways that fraternities socialize their new members -- and the manner in which hazing and alcohol play integral roles. Additionally, for several years prior to his academic research, Dr. Arnold was immersed in campus Greek culture as an event photographer.

Dr. Arnold's research and writing have frequently been cited in academic journal articles as well as the popular press.

Liquid Bonding: A Cultural Analysis of the Role of Alcohol in Fraternity Pledgeship
Qualitative methods were used to discover how the pledgeship experience shapes alcohol use of fraternity members. Regulating alcohol use is a key element in a complicated system of rewards and sanctions administered by active members designed to socialize newcomers to group norms and values.

Alcohol, Hazing, and Fraternities As Addictive Organizations
During the period of time that I was doing my doctoral research, they called me "the alcohol man." "They" were the pledges, members, and friends, of a fraternity on a large public university campus in the Midwest. Starting in 1991, and continuing until 1995, I interviewed high-school-age recruits, pledges, and active members, of the group I called Iota Nu Sigma (INS, a pseudonym) about their use of alcohol.

    James C. Arnold, Ph.D.
This doctoral dissertation is an interpretive case study that focuses on a specific subculture of college undergraduates, namely a male fraternity. Based on nearly three years of investigation using interviews, observation, and document analysis, the research offers a detailed look at the organization’s socialization process, including the ways that alcohol and hazing are used a critical elements of group indoctrination.
