2/17/2002 · Expert Witnessing
Attorneys use experts in two ways. First is the traditional use of an expert as a witness in court. In this role, scientists, business people, or others with technical knowledge are retained by attorneys primarily for their opinions (oral, written, or both), ultimately to be given at deposition and in civil and criminal courts. Second, the expert may be used as a pre-trial consultant or more specifically as an undisclosed consultant

Olen R. Brown, PhD
"Miracles" reveals truth from Scripture, science and life. Everything that is or was or is to come is part of God's miracle. Science says that nothing is miraculous- Time and Chance created the universe with no meaning or purpose. God's universe has great meaning extending from the stars to atoms and to you. What we believe about miracles can be a source of great joy or missed joy in our lives. Dr. Brown, a Christian and author of over 100 scientific papers, has coined a new word, synscicretism, to call attention to the doctrine that today elevates science above religion. Science works best for the great "how" questions, but poorly for the great "why" of all things.
Olen R. Brown, PhD
This authoritative guide is designed to achieve a synthesis of understanding and effort between case science and case law. It examines all stages of attorney/expert interaction from the initial interview to post-trial evaluation.

With the Piazza case at Penn State dominating the news, and opinion leaders from all sides checking in and editorializing, I thought I might add a few suggestions of my own. I was involved in fraternity management from 1973 until 2013. I have held almost every leadership function in a national fraternity from the local alumni association to the national and to the foundation. I currently am an Expert Witness in Greek Life Hazing and Risk Management cases and am presently appearing in 8 cases ranging from hazing to sexual abuse.

News of the tragic suicide of Marquise Braham and the resulting lawsuit against Penn State Altoona and Phi Sigma Kappa brought to the surface some very painful memories. Earlier in my career I spent several years as the Executive Director of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, a midsize International fraternity founded at Yale in 1844. Five or six US Presidents have been members(FDR was a member of the Harvard Chapter which was thrown out for not paying dues). Deke, as it is known, was international in that it had a few Canadian chapters.

The spectrum of addiction disorders presents practitioners with numerous challenges?among them the widening gap between a growing evidence base and the translation of this knowledge into treatment outcomes. Addiction Medicine addresses this disconnect, clearly explaining the role of brain function in drug taking and other habit-forming behaviors, and applying this biobehavioral framework to the delivery of evidence-based treatment.

Forensic psychological evaluations have become a valuable resource for the criminal justice system by addressing important forensic questions. For instance, assessing risk for violence can help courts make appropriate decisions on issues such as sentencing, granting privileges, and community reintegration. If an individual is assessed to be a high risk for future violence, a judge has grounds to order a more restrictive setting compared to someone who is a lower risk for recidivism. By tailoring court decisions based on accurate psychological evaluations, the community is safer while the defendant's rights are also protected.

When minors violate a criminal statute, they enter the juvenile justice system rather than the adult criminal system. Although differences exist, both court systems recognize the competency to stand trial law. Just like adults, it would be unfair for juveniles to proceed in the legal process if they were deemed incompetent to stand trial because they did not understand the court proceedings against them or could not adequately assist in their defense. The purpose of this book is to educate minors about the juvenile justice system and prepare them for their day in court.

The correctional system has become the largest provider of mental health care in our society. Due to the prevalence of mental disabilities in the criminal justice system, many defendants are found Incompetent to Stand Trial. However, defendants do not usually understand what it means to be incompetent, let alone what to do about it. The purpose of this guidebook is to help defendants better understand why they were found incompetent, what they can do about it, and how to get the best possible outcomes.
