In Audio Forensics, it often comes down to ears versus microphones. In one corner, we have the human ear with all its amazing capabilities. In the other corner, the fantastic piece of technology known as the microphone, with its ability to record sound to a digital file or tape for later playback.

A confrontation between an inmate and a Corrections Officer leads to accusations of mistreatment on one side and claims of justifiable action on the other. It was one person's word against another until an unexpected recording came to light and, with the help of sophisticated audio forensic analysis and processing, the truth was revealed.

Pocket dialing occurs when a mobile phone's touch pad is pressed by something in a person's pocket or purse, or, if the person happens to sit down a certain way, a part of their anatomy. If the pressed key or screen surface area is programmed to dial or redial a telephone number, a call occurs. This call often goes undetected by the phone's owner. Some phones are more prone to this phenomenon than others.

You have an audio recording that may be used as evidence in an upcoming court case. Looking for a way to make it easier to hear, you do an on-line search and come upon a list of "Audio Restoration companies." One specialized operation that is routinely abused is the crime scene operation. From small police departments to large law enforcement agencies, the biggest problem with crime scene operations is the presence and interference of non-essential personnel at the scene. 3/11/2015 · Psychology
Forensic psychological evaluations have become a valuable resource for the criminal justice system by addressing important forensic questions. For instance, assessing risk for violence can help courts make appropriate decisions on issues such as sentencing, granting privileges, and community reintegration. If an individual is assessed to be a high risk for future violence, a judge has grounds to order a more restrictive setting compared to someone who is a lower risk for recidivism. By tailoring court decisions based on accurate psychological evaluations, the community is safer while the defendant's rights are also protected.

    Ray S. Kim, PhD
When minors violate a criminal statute, they enter the juvenile justice system rather than the adult criminal system. Although differences exist, both court systems recognize the competency to stand trial law. Just like adults, it would be unfair for juveniles to proceed in the legal process if they were deemed incompetent to stand trial because they did not understand the court proceedings against them or could not adequately assist in their defense. The purpose of this book is to educate minors about the juvenile justice system and prepare them for their day in court.
    Ray S. Kim, PhD
The correctional system has become the largest provider of mental health care in our society. Due to the prevalence of mental disabilities in the criminal justice system, many defendants are found Incompetent to Stand Trial. However, defendants do not usually understand what it means to be incompetent, let alone what to do about it. The purpose of this guidebook is to help defendants better understand why they were found incompetent, what they can do about it, and how to get the best possible outcomes.

Forensic Semantics: Analysis of and expert opinion on the meaning of words, phrases, clauses, paragraphs, etc., in legal, personal, and commercial communication (e.g., interpretation of contracts, wills, prenuptial agreements, laws and regulations; trademark/copyright infringement).

Forensic Stylistics: Analysis of the syntax, style, word choice, spelling, punctuation, rhetorical strategies, and other features of anonymous, disputed, or forged documents (including e-mails); expert opinion on plagiarism, authorship and/or characteristics of author.
    9/1/2017 · Linguistics
As a student, scholar, and professional writer, I have long been familiar with the standards governing academic honesty and plagiarism. I applied these to many academic publications, including my master's and doctoral theses. I dealt with student plagiarism at various times in my professorial career (1967-1980), and later, as a speechwriter and corporate communicator, I applied these standards to ensure that the content of my work products, including professional articles, was either original or properly attributed.

    10/21/2014 · Linguistics
Perhaps 25% of the cases I handle involve the authorship of anonymous, disputed, or forged documents. The client wants to know who's writing those nasty, threatening emails or letters. I typically ask the client for writing samples from the suspected author. Sometimes there's more than one suspect, and I have to decide which of them may be the author of the anonymous document(s).

    1/29/2014 · Linguistics
There are many different kinds, dozens of areas of emphasis. Ultimately one becomes one's own kind of linguist, depending on where one's interest and preferences lead.

    12/26/2013 · Linguistics
A forensic linguist must be exquisitely sensitive to nuances of text. Where a synonym exists, the very choice of each word represents a decision on the part of the author. Superimposed upon that is the way the word is spelled, abbreviated or capitalized. Truly, a text is a tangle of choices.

All of a sudden, it seems, the search term Plagiarism Rand Paul gets over 40 MILLION Google hits. But the charge is somewhat bogus.

    6/21/2013 · Linguistics
I advertise myself (accurately) as a "linguistics expert" so I sometimes get questions about language usage.

    9/30/2011 · Linguistics
It's not often that forensic linguistics makes the news. It's not nearly as sexy or yucky as the forensics that originates in the pathologist's lab or at the murder site.

    8/9/2011 · Linguistics

For forty years, PAUL KAYFETZ, INC. through Mr. Kayfetz' expert testimony, has routinely admitted the following into evidence:
  • Driverseye Visibility Studies
  • Night-Time Photography
  • Computer and Video Simulations
  • Accident Reconstruction Photos
  • Photogrammetry Photo Measuring

Our computer engineers, video engineers and engineering photography experts:
  • Apply Accepted Engineering Measurements Procedures
  • Have Published Numerous Peer-Reviewed Engineering Papers
  • Use HD Video Systems that Produce Movie Theater Quality
  • Apply Cutting Edge Computer Techniques for Lifelike Photorealistic Images (not Computer Cartoons)
  • Coordinate with the Best Accident Reconstruction and Human Factors Experts for Technical Accuracy

We frequently help plan complete technical testing, visibility study, computer simulation and demonstrative evidence strategy - coordinating a group of technical witnesses who are independently retained by counsel. This is requested by many clients because of Mr. Kayfetz' track record, his previous career as an attorney, his extensive contact with top experts from his forty years experience as an engineering photography consultant working with the best forensic witnesses on many of the major cases during those decades, and upon his membership and participation in major engineering societies.

Each year we help attorneys win and save hundreds of millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements.

This results primarily from our experience and expertise. It also stems from our ability to discover measurements from existing photos. We are ahead of everyone in our field because we invest in HD cameras costing 250,000 each, six figure computer systems, custom engineering computer programs and staff engineers - not artists.

A major part of our work is evaluating and keeping out of evidence opponents' forensic photography, computer simulations, or computer animations which do not comply with the rules of evidence. This has swung multi-million dollar results several times in recent years.

The explanation then given is a basic, but little understood, fundamental of the presentation of a visibility study in court. A visibility study depicts what is available to be seen by a person with normal, unimpaired vision under defined conditions similar enough to those at issue to provide relevant information about levels of visibility, lines-of-sight, timing of visibility, and to demonstrate expert witness(es)' opinions.

    8/27/2009 · Human Factors
Jurors jumped as the wild boar in the motorcycle headlights suddenly filled the large screen in front of them.A week later they awarded the motorcyclist several million dollars against Caltrans for not mitigating a chronic wild pig problem on Highway One in Monterey County. The jury found that the motorcyclist had a 0.10 blood alcohol level and was negligent, but that our HD-video visibility study showed that even an unimpaired driver could not have seen the pig in time to avoid it.

The objective of this article is to report on the integration of improved video and related computer technology into existing, long-accepted visibility study preparation and presentation methodologies. The result has been an incremental extension of the types of visual environments which can be reproduced with substantial similarity for admission as visibility evidentiary exhibits in court
