There’s a lot of confusion about “forced reset triggers”, or “FRTs”. The first fact to remember is that ALL TRIGGERS are forced into the reset position, and therefore all triggers are “forced reset”. However, most triggers are forced into the reset position by a spring. The ones which everyone refers to as FRTs are those forced by something other than a spring (a locking bar or whatever other designed part).
A recent story of an arrest for possessing an “FRT” in Washington DC is found at https://lnkd.in/eE77N3K6
It’s unknown what version of an FRT the arrested person had.
Keep in mind that ATF only entered an agreement recently with the company Rare Breed Triggers, that their product, the FRT-15 forced reset trigger isn’t a machinegun. And it took ATF FOUR YEARS to figure that out. ATF however, has made NO agreement concerning other devices commonly considered to be FRTs such as “Super Safeties”, “Arizona Regulators”, or any other device or version of a trigger. That isn’t to say that those are illegal, only that no one other than Rare Breed has a known written agreement with ATF that their product isn’t considered a machinegun.
This doesn’t affect the fact that the federal definition requires a device to allow “more than one shot by a single function of the trigger”, to be a machinegun, but that didn’t keep ATF from costing Rare Breed millions in legal fees and four years of sales before admitting they were wrong (and they knew it) about how the item works. Don’t get the idea that everything someone calls a forced reset trigger is “legal”. Every maker or possessor of one other than Rare Breeds products could have a long legal road ahead of them.
ATF and other anti-gun people have displayed that they dislike anything that fires fast. So if you have any type of forced reset trigger other than a Rare Breed (or WOT) FRT-15, you could be an arrest waiting to happen.
