While lead based paint is a key source, lead migrating from outdoor areas can be as toxic as the indoor paint sources. Dr Troast uses the Integrated Exposure Uptake and Biokinetic Model IEUBK Model) as a predictive tool for assessing residences.

The plaintiff was concerned that the residues of toxic metals found in coal ash were causing physical damage to the plaintiff's unborn children and to the plaintiff's ability to have normal children. The plaintiff reported prior attempts to conceive a full-term child were unsuccessful.

    The willingness to view risk as part of daily life has vanished. A risk-averse mindset among environmental regulators engenders confusion between the ethics of intention and the ethics of consequence, leading to the elevation of the precautionary principle with unintended and often unfortunate outcomes. Environmental risk assessment is conservative, but the actual level of conservatism cannot be determined. High-end exposure assumptions and current toxicity criteria from the USEPA, based on linear extrapolation for carcinogens and default uncertainty factors for systemic toxicants, obscure the degree of conservatism in risk assessments. Ideally, one could choose a percentile of the target population to include within environmental standards, but this choice is complicated by the food, pharmaceutical and advertising industries, whose activities, inadvertent or not, often promote maladaptive and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

    Joel I. Berman, Vice President, CIH, CSP, CAC, CIAQM, is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and a California Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC).     Kathy Jones Industrial Hygiene Management Expert PhotoKathy S. Jones — Vice President, CIH, CAC, LPM/IA, CIAQM, is responsible for technical management and quality control. She supervises the work of professional staff assigned to implement Industrial Hygiene sampling strategies designed by either herself or others. As a management consultant, Ms. Jones will also review client Industrial Hygiene and Safety programs to ensure that they are complete and that they meet or exceed the requirements set by Cal/OSHA; review and prepare client safety data sheets (SDSs); and provide professional training. Previously, Ms. Jones developed and directed HSA's fully accredited industrial hygiene laboratory for 13 years. Under her direction, the laboratory went from a single person laboratory to a staff of 30 full-time chemists operating seven days per week/18 hours per day. Certifications and accreditations, including full AIHA Laboratory Accreditation, State of California Drinking Water and Hazardous Waste Certification and National Institutes for Standards and Technology Accreditation in Bulk and Airborne Asbestos Analysis, were obtained under her direction.

    Hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment. The universe of hazardous wastes is large and diverse. Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, or contained gases. They can be discrete chemical compounds, mixtures of compounds, or simply have some property that makes them hazardous. In regulatory terms, a hazardous waste is a waste that appears on one of the four RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) hazardous wastes lists (the F-list, K-list, P-list, or U-list) or that exhibits one of the four characteristics of a hazardous waste - ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity.

    In 2002, a violent explosion from inside the basement of a ten-story building in New York City hospitalized 31 people (four critically) and caused extensive damages to the masonry structure. The blast dislodged portions of the basement ceiling and inside walls, collapsed the concrete stairwells and portions of the elevator shaft, and shattered glass windows five stories above ground

    A New York City pathologist who lived in a Manhattan apartment claimed personal injury from the inhalation of vapors released from a commercially available construction adhesive used in her apartment while she was present. The plaintiff claimed permanent pulmonary distress, asthmatic symptoms, and sensitization to the smell of virtually all other chemicals – including common household chemicals.

    Dr. Sklash's research from the 1970s through the 1990s led him to become world renown in his field of Isotope Hydrogeology. It is now a keystone in the understanding of how groundwater interacts with streams, and his publications are frequently termed “bench mark.” During his academic days, Dr. Sklash was a visiting scientist in many places around the world, including: New Zealand, Australia, England, China, India, and Africa. He was a consultant to the USEPA and Atomic Energy Canada Limited, among others.
